The advertising market today is not the same as it was 20, 15, 10, or even 5 years ago. The world has changed, which includes the marketing world. We’re spending more time online, particularly on social networking sites such as Facebook, even if we like it or not :-] And while you’re here be sre to check out How TO: Set up Facebook in Order to Promote Yourself Effectively

So this is a post covering Advertising for the Next Now Generation – Facebook ads are especially useful because they target a smaller, and potentially more likely, market for your products by focusing on factors such as location, age, education, etc., while weeding out the least likely customers.

Facebook is now one of the most popular online social networking websites; passing MySpace as the “place to be” ages ago and Twitter, despite a strong following, cannot compete with Facebook’s numbers. People spend ages on the site making new friends, interacting, and playing games. An advertising message transmitted over Facebook will result in more website traffic, more inquiries, more interest!

How to use this veritable gold mine of possibilities? Two of the most successful and popular ways to advertise are social ads and fan pages.

Social Ads

Social Ads are the little square boxes that appear to the right of every Facebook page, targeting people based on age, gender, interest, marital status, location, almost any piece of information located on their own Facebook page. By targeting customers in such a specific way, less time is wasted on general advertising. Target markets are selected with a much higher chance of success. For example, perhaps you run a wedding planning company if the ad targets only engaged women, you have already selected the core group your client base would come from!

Fan Pages

Fan Pages are very common for advertisers. Once creating a fan page for a company or product, anyone who clicks on ‘become a fan’ will have your information automatically added to their home page feed. You can post promotions, discount codes, and sales on the page, and reach every single person who had chosen to become a fan. As the fans invite their friend’s numbers will rise exponentially. You can use this medium also to gather valuable feedback from people who use your products. For example, Holyclothing, a popular online retailer of plus-sized clothing, has a large fan page including 6.513 fans as of 1 p.m. on April 12, 2010. This retailer uses her site to request fan opinions on possible clothing styles so she can focus on what her customer base wants.

One can find fan pages on Facebook for hundreds of companies. Wendy’s, the popular fast-food giant, has a fan page that as of 1 p.m. on April 12, 2010 had 354,234 fans. McDonalds’ tops this with a staggering 2,069,604 fans, and even Burger King is playing the game with an impressive 221,341 fans. Companies big and small are discovering the possibilities of a Facebook fan page, and best of all? It’s 100% free to create! A single employee can maintain and run the page for an entire corporation. The output of money is nothing compared to the influx of sales and customers.

That’s all for now, what’s your take on this?

Business cards are one of the elements of corporate design that should be pushed beyond just graphics, and converge with several processes to become what they should be: a memorable, collectible and impressive piece to be carried away everywhere. The following are perfect examples, and have overcome the graphic-only component of the piece by using different materials and techniques. A recognizable pattern in all these designs is the use of die-cuts.

Print applications on inset embossed paper; multiple textures in one piece.

Print with golden / silver special inks. You can feel the texture of this piece just by looking at it. Design by NothingSomething NY

Speaking of heavy, this business card has completely re-thought the concept into a metal token reflecting the goods of the product design company: Dashdotstudios

Patterns and thickness are the main visual elements in this business card for Le Club Fez; again, a label die-cut applied to the body of the card allows for easy replacement for new data. Design by Hook USA.

The demand for good web design is increasing, revealed a recent Webcopyplus online poll. Almost 25% of web users indicated “poor visual presentation” as the number one element that drives them away from websites. Only 6.6% of web users who participated in a similar 2007 online poll indicated “poor visual presentation” as the main reason to abandon a website. That equates to a 267% increase during the two-year period.

Our web content specialists believe the increased desire for quality design comes from the fact that Internet users have become increasingly sophisticated. Consequently, more of today’s Internet users understand that a well designed website makes it possible to achieve more, with less time and effort.

A total of 318 web users were asked what’s most likely to drive them away from a website.

50.9% indicated “slow load times”

24.8% noted “weak web copy”

24.2% specified “poor visual presentation”

In the 2007 poll, 51.2% of 258 participants indicated “slow load times” and 42.2% noted “weak web copy” as their biggest turn-offs.

True Beauty Comes From Within

Informed web designers and business owners alike know that design is vital to a successful website, and its beauty must go far beyond looks. While design needs to support a company’s brand positioning, it must also effectively inform, communicate and provide positive experiences.

A winning website is one that delivers useful, relevant content that allows people to accomplish their goals quickly and easily. In today’s hectic society, that’s what makes a great and lasting impression on the Web.

Good design achieves simplicity through a range of elements — from a single point of focus to intuitive information flow to plain, familiar menu names. And as more people flock to the Web for everything from casual encounters to green homes, more businesses will likely lean on web specialists who can contribute to effective design.

Web professionals who specialize in select services, technologies and industries will increasingly thrive with higher tier clients and get paid accordingly. In contrast, jack-of-all-trade web types can’t keep up with every emerging tactic and tool, and they’ll eventually only appeal to and serve clients who are purely price-driven. These clients generally don’t value expertise, nor are they willing to pay for it.

Additionally, web professionals will benefit from the fact that businesses are pushing more of their marketing dollars online – even those businesses that have been hesitant to shift from traditional media such as TV, radio and newsprint.

Moving marketing online makes more sense than ever. Something’s off when typical consumers might spend 25% of their media time on the Web and a company is investing only 5% or so of its marketing budgets on websites and other online promotions.

With almost 75% of global consumers using the Web frequently (Internet World Stats), a $10,000 investment in a website will get almost any business a better return on investment than an ad in a newspaper, magazine or print telephone directory. A website can provide greater reach and superior exposure, and it works for a business 24/7 for multiple years.

Web Copy Carries Punch

With 24.8% of web poll participants indicating weak web copy would most likely prompt them to abandon a website, businesses should continue to take their web writing seriously.

While there appears to be increasing awareness surrounding web writing in general, many businesses continue to fail to recognize what a professional web writer can bring to a website and a business’s bottom line.

Web writers, website content writers, SEO copy writers — call them what you will — these web copy specialists are often not even being considered a part of the equation when it comes to building or overhauling a website.

A well-versed web writer can help a business with everything from attaining traffic via search engines, to differentiating a business from competitors and conveying key benefits effectively, to achieving higher conversion rates.

Fortunately, as of late, there are more web-related organizations and schools introducing copywriting courses specifically for the Web, which promises to increase the supply and qualifications of web writers, particularly in the United States and Canada.

An increase in writers who specialize in the Web will help decrease the ineffective, error-laden, self-centered copy that is so common on the Web.

Need for Speed

More than 50% of poll participants noted that getting their information promptly on the Web is a top concern. Make them wait, and they are likely to hit a competitor’s site.

Good web designers and developers respond by optimizing images, streamlining HTML and avoiding dated gimmicks like Flash intros. But some designers and business owners alike continue to fall into such traps.

A designer recently told me about an architecture company that just spent tens of thousands of dollars on a Flash intro. Unfortunately, web designers and business owners sometimes let their egos get in the way. They fail to acknowledge that when a prospect visits a website looking for information or to complete a task, that Flash intro will only get in the way, and potentially frustrate visitors.

Flash intros were tolerated in the ’90s when the Web was a novelty. People were excited about this new thing called the World Wide Web, and we spent countless hours surfing it. Today, however, most people want to get information and complete tasks in as little time and with as few clicks as possible, so they can get on with their busy lives.

Give Users What They Want

Internet professionals would better serve Internet users by collaborating and delivering simple, fast, useful and convenient websites.

Give Internet users what they want and everyone wins: web users benefit from ease of use and efficiency; businesses enjoy increased leads and sales; and the web professionals maximize income and fill their portfolios with winning websites.

Twitter has just rolled out a new homepage that non-logged in users see when they visit Twitter.com. It features scrolling trending topics, “top tweets” (a tweet from Justin Bieber was the first one I saw… go figure), and a “who’s here” with avatars of well-known users and brands that are on the microblogging service.

It’s not clear if the new homepage is live for everyone yet, but here’s a screenshot:

The latest homepage seems to de-emphasize the trending topics, and instead focus on popular users, in the form of tweets and the “who’s here” section. That would seem to represent a compromise between exerting editorial control over trending topics (which I’ve proposed) and painting Twitter in the right light to outsiders.

As designers and developers our clients are our business, so a key part of being successful is cultivating a healthy relationship with them. We are usually so caught up with the “project-in-project-out” mentality, we forget that one of our greatest assets as freelancers is a reoccurring client. In this 3rd article of Client Tactics series, we will discuss the reasons for managing existing clients. We will also see how to manage them effectively.

Reasons for maintaining clients.

Statistically it is seven times easier to maintain an existing client than is to go out and get a new client. On a common sense level, it just makes a good business strategy to try to maintain as many existing clients as you can. This will allow you to plan ahead and budget more for the future. The following are a few more reasons for maintaining existing clients.

1. Rapport is Already Established.

The hard work of getting to know your client has been done. You know their corporate strategies, their ways of thinking, and ways of doing business. Heck, you even know how many olives they enjoy in their martinis. Having worked together before, everyone involved is more comfortable during the new project. Already having rapport with the client means that they trust your judgment and input, they know that their project is in capable hands. With the proverbial ice being broken, you can skip the first step of client-freelancer-posturing and get down to the matter at hand: making a great project.

2. Lower Cost of Retention vs Marketing.

It costs less to keep an existing client content, over marketing your services to a new client. This is true in almost every other business model known to man, and it especially holds true for freelancing. If an existing client has a concern with their e-commerce site that be solved with a quick email, what did that email cost you? Five minutes away from watching ‘Lost’? Your five-minute email just saved your client five hours of headache and worry. That five-minute email is worth its file size in gold to the client. It keeps your existing client content and didn’t cost you anything. The next time you pay for advertising, think of how many new clients you attract for $100 and how many existing clients you keep content for free. The little things you do for existing clientage can really add up.

3. It Keeps Your Name in Their Mouths.

By keeping in touch with existing clients, it keeps your name in their mouths, of course I am talking referrals! A happy customer is the best marketing that anyone can have. Michael LaBoeuf said it best, “A satisfied customer is the best business strategy of all.”. Think back to our five-minute email scenario, the existing customer knows you saved him time and worry. He will tell anyone who is willing to listen about his awesome customer service experience with his web designer. That kind of candid testimonial reaches farther than any advertising dollar you have to spend.

Keep the Lines of Communication Open.

In this day and age, there are almost limitless ways to keep in touch with your existing clients. From old school mailers and newsletters to a quick twitter direct message, reaching out to a client should be quick, thought out, and never perceived as a tedious task.

Newsletters

Since moving into the 21st century, the amount of snail mail a business receives is on the decline. One way to set yourself apart from the pack is to design a mailer. It could be an actual newsletter or perhaps even a postcard with a promo code. Another good idea would be sending a holiday card or birthday card to your client.

Email Campaigns

Since everyone (including my grandmother) has an email address now, an email campaign to contact is easier and more effective than ever. Most e-mail newsletter software is affordable, if not free, and will allow for mass communication to clients.

Phone Calls

While this part of the game may make you feel like a telemarketer, calling your existing clients during their major milestones will lessen the “I’ve got something to sell you” speech and seem more genuine. Even if you get the voice mail of your client, leave a quick message congratulating them on their recent success.

Commenting on Blogs

If some of your clients have blogs, subscribe to their RSS feeds and categorize them under ‘Clients’. Check it every few weeks, read an article or two, then leave simple constructive feedback in a comment. Try to refrain from the typical “Nice Post!”, “Interesting read.” or “First!”. Remember everyone needs a little comment love every now and again.

Social Networks

Right after my grandmother got an email account, she signed up for Facebook. I wish I was joking. Social networks are the hot, “in” thing now, some people even communicate through social networking channels more than standard email. Social networking is changing the way people communicate online. So it only stands to reason that one should contact your clients via their social network of choice. While social networks are often less formal than email or other means of contact, one should still exhibit a professional customer driven persona.

Direct Contact

While all the means of contact above work. The most direct way of contact is physical face-to-face contact. This could be a planned “I was in the neighborhood” visit or could even be a chance encounter while shopping with your family. Now with some clients this is impossible; say the ones in different time zones but, if they are local to your area this method of contact is a valuable tool.

Client Stalking is Bad.

During your initial project with a client, ask if it’s alright to contact them in the future after the scope of the project has been completed. I have never had a client tell me no. Most clients will like the upfront nature of this comment, it shows you value their time and respect their privacy by only contacting them if they wish. If the client does give you permission to contact them, that doesn’t mean contact them every time they issue a press release or stop by their shop every Thursday. Limit your interaction to big events, such as:

A new store location.

Your contact at the client’s office getting a promotion.

If local and announced to the public, the client recently had a new child.

Major holidays (keep the card generic, “Happy Holidays” not “Merry Christmas”).

Contact or client’s birthday.

In Closing.

Maintaining existing clients is a reward experience for any freelancer. The key to keeping any client happy albeit, a full service web design client or a ‘mom-and-pop’ start-up needing help with social networking for the first time, is customer service. So keep your customer service kung fu strong until next when talk about essential contract basics for freelancers.

Socialwok, a product that ads a social layer to Gmail and other Google products, was justintegrated as a partner in Google’s recently launched Google Apps Marketplace. At last year’s TechCrunch50 conference, Socialwok made a big splash, winning the award for best demopit startup and launching its enterprise-friendly, FriendFeed-like layer for Google Apps. The web-based application was praised for launching a social network that wrapped around the very unsocial Google Apps. And the startup just launched a gadget to allow users access all the features of Socialwok without leaving Gmail. Today, Socialwok is becoming more than just a collaboration platform; the startup is integrating with Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz, and RSS feeds to allow users to tap into their outside social networks within Socialwok.
Socialwok is now a full-fledged Twitter client and allows users to Tweet directly from its platform, as well as track a brand or keywords on Twitter from within the application. Additionally, users can monitor and track updates on a Facebook page. Socialwok is also allowing users to import RSS feeds and share it within a company’s Socialwok account. And Socialwok is integrated with Google Buzz, and allows users to tap into their Buzz streams from within the platform and share content in Buzz from within Socialwok.

With the addition of social networking functionality, Socialwok is becoming more than just a collaboration platform. In fact, the application is developing into a full-fledged social CRM, taking on Salesforce’s Chatter, Jive, Socialcast and a host of other enterprise friendly social networks. CEO Ming Yong tells me that after the startup’s launch on the Google Apps marketplace last week, Socialwok signed up over 4000 businesses to its service. Prior to the launch on the marketplace, 6,000 domains and tens of thousands of users were using Socialwok.

Socialwok, which employs a freemium model, has steadily been adding features and improvements to its application, including releasing a new version of its HTML 5 mobile version for Android and iPhone browsers. And in the process of developing an innovative application, startup managed to catch Google’s eye. In addition to joining as a pilot partner on the Google App Marketplace, Socialwok was chosen as one of the showcase companies for AppEngine technology at this year’s Google IO Developer Sandbox (Socialwok is powered by Google App Engine). And the startup wrote a blog post on Google’s Enterprise Blog about Socialwok.

We’ve continuously written that if Google doesn’t buy the startup, they should at least heavily promoting what they’re doing. And it appears that Google has taken the latter route. For now. There’s no doubt that Socialwok could face the same fate as Google Docs killer and collaboration platform Etherpad or Microsoft Word collaboration plug-in Docverse.

The World Wildlife Fund’s now annual Earth Hour campaign is great way for individuals to take a stand against climate change. Something as simple as switching your lights off for one hour can make a visual statement of your support for the global sustainability movement.

Begun back in Australia in 2007, last year’s event saw such world famous landmarks as the CN Tower in Toronto, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, and The Eiffel Tour flick the switch on their illumination, not to mention the millions of people across the world who did the same on a smaller, but no less important scale.

Earth Hour 2010 takes place today, Saturday, March 27th at 8:30 p.m. your local time. As well as turning your lights off for the allotted time, here are some other social ways you can show your support for Earth Hour.
1. On Twitter

A global “lights off” event is planned for everyone’s favorite micro-blogging service Twitter with a click-through app you can activate now that will automatically turn the lights off on your Twitter profile picture for Earth Hour. The app auto-tweets out a get prepared message to your followers as you activate it, and will do the same when the hour begins. You can also add an Earth Hour “Twibbon” to your Twitter avatar.

2. On Facebook

Just like the Twitter lights off option, there’s one available for Facebook too created by Fennek & Friends. As with the previously mentioned version, this one-click app will turn the lights off your profile picture at the correct time. Another Facebook option is an app that installs a virtual light switch — one that’s customizable, as well as shareable — which can be found via the “light switch” tab on Earth Hour’s Facebook Fan Page.

3. On Your Website

You can create and embed a virtual lantern on your website with some simple HTML code, available to copy and paste here. There’s another embeddable widget from Call2Action that can also be posted on your website or blog, or can be e-mailed or shared via the usual social networking channels.

4. On Flickr

There’s a dedicated Earth Hour account on the photo sharing service Flickr that will show pictures of various lights out ceremonies. Don’t forget to subscribe now and check back for some great shots when the lights come back up. Tagging your own relevant pics “earth hour” on the site will add them to the pool.

5. On YouTube

There’s a great Earth Hour YouTube channel that offers some amazing clips from years past. They include both overview videos about the movement, and footage from individual events around the globe. Subscribe, watch, and be inspired to get involved and spread the word!

Tutorialzine has writen tutorial “how to create colorful sliders with jQuery & CSS3“. This tutorial using jQuery and the new transformation features brought by CSS3 to create a three dimensional dynamic slider effect. The techniques presented here – for creating sliders, and CSS dynamic resizable bars, can be used together or in part for powering all sorts of jQuery goodness.

Basically it has only two structures, which are duplicated three times, once for every color. It has the slider structure, which is a div with two assigned class names – colorful-slider, and another one of three color choices. The latter one is later used by jQuery to determine which bar the slide movement affects.

Here they use the jQuery UI’s draggable method, which converts any div on your page into a draggable object. They also define the drag function which will be executed on every drag movement. PSD file also available for further cuztomization.

Requirements: jQuery 1.4.2, jQuery UI library
Demo: http://demo.tutorialzine.com/2010/03/colorful-sliders-jquery-css3/demo.html
